GODESMANNESCAMP, lost Domesday Book manor
This was in Rowditch hundred, but it has been thought, for no obvious reason to be in Fordingbridge hundred; that is presumably why 'Godmanes Cap' appears on modern OS maps as the name of the fortification above GODSHILL whose own name has suggested the identification. The name means 'camp of God's man', it seems. 'Camp' in place names originally meant 'uncultivated land on the edge of a Romano British villa estate', cf Gelling (1978: 74-8).
